The only score in the 2nd Quarter came when Derby’s Oliwa again ran into the end zone, this time from just a yard out, giving Derby a 14-12 lead at the half.

After a Jakwan Hale 4 yard TD reception gave Derby a 20-12 lead, Oxford responded with a score of their own on a 6 yard run by Matt Stordy.  The attempt to tie the game was unsuccessful and Derby clinged to a 2 point lead at 20-18.

In the 4th Quarter, Derby’s Tom Abel scored with 5:55 to play giving Derby a 26-18 lead, but the Wolverines refused to quit and drove down the field and scored when Senior Captain Rob Sergiyenko caught a 5 yard pass in the end zone from Cayden Mitchell making the score 26-24 with 2:01 seconds to play.  The Wolverines threw the ball into the end zone for the 2 point conversion and tied the game at 26-26.

After a quick 3 play Defensive stop, the visiting Wolverines took possession and scored on their first Offensive play of the game, when Cayden Mitchell found Julian Ferrante on a post pattern for a 62 yard Touchdown reception. Matt Stordy ran in the 2 point conversion to give Oxford an 8 – 0 lead just 2 minutes into the game.

Oxford scored again on its next possession when Mitchell found Fullback Dylan Mavricz on a 4th and 3 from the 11 yard line giving the Wolverines a 14 – 0 lead. After another stellar showing on Defense, led by Peter O’Connell, Matt Falcon, Nick Villano, and Nick Fedak, the Wolverines drove the football 65 yards behind the running of Matt Stordy, who plunged into the end zone on a 1 yard TD run. Joe Yacovelli scored the 2 point conversion attempt, and Oxford held a commanding 22 – 0 lead.

The Hawks from Woodland did not go away quietly and put together a nice drive and scored making the score 20 – 6, but with just 31 seconds to play in the 1st half, Stordy took the ball off the left tackle behind the blocking of Trevor Mowry, Wade Brooks, Rob Sergiyenko, and Dylan Mavricz and raced 75 yards into the end zone giving the Wolverines a 28 – 6 lead at the half.

The Oxford Football lost a heartbreaker to Crosby High School by a score of 50 – 40 this past Friday night in Oxford. After scoring on their 1st drive, a 1 yard run by Matt Stordy, and converting the 2 pt attempt, a pass from Cayden Mitchell to Julian Ferrante, the young Wolverines lead by a score of 8-0 with 7:43 left to play in the 1st Quarter.
The Bulldogs from Waterbury answered quickly with a score of their own, but failed in their conversion attempt, and Oxford lead 8-6 with just 5:30 left in the 1st Quarter.

On Oxford’s next play from scrimmage, Mitchell found Ferrante all alone in the middle of the field for a 57 yard scoring play. The conversion attempt failed and Oxford had a 14-6 lead with 5:10 to play in the 1st quarter.

In the 2nd quarter, Oxford scored again with 8:15 seconds to play on another Matt Stordy touchdown run from 10 yards out to make the score Oxford 20 Crosby 6. The Bulldogs would fight back and scored 2 more times before the half was over, and the contest was tied at 20 going into halftime.

In the 3rd Quarter, Crosby scored first to take a 26 – 20 lead, only to have Oxford tie the score on another Julian Ferrante reception from Cayden Mitchell, this time from 56 yards out. Oxford would regain the lead with 5:02 seconds to play in the 3rd, on another Matt Stordy touchdown run of 8 yards, making the score 32-26. Thirty seconds later, Crosby was able to tie the game at 32.

In the 4th Quarter, on a 4th and 8, a controversial touchdown call gave Crosby the lead once again as the Crosby wide receiver appeared to have dropped the football. The officials disagreed with each other on the call, and a touchdown was determined to be the outcome. The following 2 pt conversion attempt was no good, but again another controversial penalty was called against the Wolverines and Crosby was given another attempt at the conversion try. This time Crosby was successful and the Bulldog lead was now 10 instead of 8, with just 7:36 to play in the game.

On Oxford’s next possession, Mitchell found Captain Robert Sergiyenko down the right sideline and Sergiyenko did the rest, scampering 46 yards to pay dirt bringing the Wolverines to within 4 points, 42 – 38. Andrew Aldo caught the 2 pt conversion attempt from Mitchell, to make the score 42 – 40 with just 7:10 to play.

After both teams traded possessions, Crosby took over on downs at the Oxford 39 yard line with just 2:36 seconds to play and scored to make the final score 50 – 40. The exciting back-and-forth game was watched before a loud and energetic crowd, especially the OZONE student section.
