Oxford Football loses to Wolcott

The Oxford Football team fell to Wolcott this past Friday by a score of 58 – 34.  Wolcott jumped out to an early score, followed quickly by a 43 yard Matt Stordy catch-and-run from Cayden Mitchell to make the score 8-6.  The home team Eagles struck quickly for 3 more scores and took a 28-6 lead.

The Wolverines fought back and answered with a Matt Stordy 1 yard run to cut the lead to 28 – 12, but Wolcott was able to find the end zone 1 more time before the half ended to make the score 36 – 12 at the break.

In the 3rd quarter, Dylan Batlle scored on a 3 yard run, but Wolcott was able to score twice more and at the end of 3 quarters of play, Wolcott held a 50 – 18 lead.

The Wolverines refused to quit, and Robert Sergiyenko caught a Mitchell pass and raced 57 yards down the right sideline for a touchdown.  The 2 point conversion made the score 50 – 26.  Following a turnover on downs, the Wolverines found paydirt again, this time on an Andrew Aldo 18 yard reception from Mitchell.  Sergiyenko caught the 2 pt pass to make the score 50 – 34 with 5:36 to play in the game.

Wolcott then was able to march down the field and scored with just 1:12 seconds left to make the final score 58-34.

The Wolverines will be home this Friday to honor its Senior’s on Senior Night.  They will be taking on the Wilby Wildcats at 6:00pm.

Heartbreaking Loss for Oxford

The Oxford Football team suffered a heartbreaking defeat to the hands of Derby Friday night by a score of 32 – 26.

Oxford scored first after an interception by Julian Ferrante set up the Wolverines on their opponents 26 yard line.  Cayden Mitchell found Joe Yacovelli on a sprint out down the right sideline for a touchdown and gave Oxford a quick 6-0 lead with 9:39 to play in the 1st Quarter.

Derby responded with 3:31 left in the 1st Quarter when QB Chris Oliwa ran it in from 4 yards out.  Zaire Flowers ran in the 2pt conversion and the Red Raiders took the lead 8-6.  Oxford came back quickly and with just minute to play in the 1st, regained the lead on a 5 yard run by Dylan Batlle.  The try for conversion was unsuccessful and the lead remained at 12-8.

The only score in the 2nd Quarter came when Derby’s Oliwa again ran into the end zone, this time from just a yard out, giving Derby a 14-12 lead at the half.

After a Jakwan Hale 4 yard TD reception gave Derby a 20-12 lead, Oxford responded with a score of their own on a 6 yard run by Matt Stordy.  The attempt to tie the game was unsuccessful and Derby clinged to a 2 point lead at 20-18.

In the 4th Quarter, Derby’s Tom Abel scored with 5:55 to play giving Derby a 26-18 lead, but the Wolverines refused to quit and drove down the field and scored when Senior Captain Rob Sergiyenko caught a 5 yard pass in the end zone from Cayden Mitchell making the score 26-24 with 2:01 seconds to play.  The Wolverines threw the ball into the end zone for the 2 point conversion and tied the game at 26-26.

On Derby’s next offensive possession, they were able to drive the ball down the field and score with just 23.5 seconds to play giving them a 32-26 lead.  But Oxford still did not quit, and returned Derby’s kick off back to the Derby 20 yard line with just 8.9 seconds to play, giving them 1 more chance to pull out the win.  Unfortunately for Oxford, the pass was unsuccessful and Derby held on for the victory, 32-26.

Oxford will travel to Wolcott next Friday night for a 6:30 kick off.  The game will be aired live as The Game of the Week on 1320 AM Waterbury radio.

Nutmeg Book Club – October

Article Written by: Morgan Hines

On October 12, the OHS Nutmeg Book Club held their second meeting of the year. At this meeting, the club discussed the book More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera. Which is about a boy from the Bronx, who wants to erase certain memories from his past, by a company called Leteo. Who specializes in this field. The book follows him and his journey, as he discovers himself and how he should live his life. The book was overall very riveting, and contained many unexpected events the reader never saw coming. The book was an excellent read. If you are interested in reading the book, you can pick it up a copy at the OHS LMC or at the Oxford Public Library.

The club also discussed their next read which is titled: Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda. Which is a book about a sixteen-year-old boy named Simon. Simon is not comfortable about revealing that he is gay, and keeps it a secret. Though he keeps his sexuality a secret, he writes e-mails anonymously, to a boy named Blue. Who is also gay, and also goes to his school. Simon is perfectly happy with the way things are. That is until an e-mail from Blue gets discovered by a boy at his school. The boy’s name is Martin, and agrees to keep his secret as long as he helps him get closer to a girl at their school named Abby, who happens to be Simon’s best friend. If he doesn’t he risks getting his e-mails leaked to everyone at school.

The meeting to discuss this book will be on October 31, which is a Tuesday. It will be right after school at the LMC. If you are interested in coming, you can pick up a copy of this book at the LMC from Mr. Bilmes.
